[wms-dev] WMS/WFS with global or regional coverage?

This is an interesting discussion. I work in the library sector and am
currently working on an article about emerging challenges and
opportunities for libraries in the area of geospatial web services,
including supporting service discovery. We've worked in the past with
helping find maps and digital data; getting into the business of
supporting access to web services requires thinking about things like
functional metadata (what things do--not just content), service
reliability metrics, relating data objects to services, etc.--new stuff
to think about.
Another resource: The National Map Catalog is US-specific and not as
extensive as other lists (presumably the listed services are in the
GIDB), but it is interesting in that it exposes an API and is stated to
be working toward OGC Catalog Services 2.0 compliance. Also, service
reliability data is gathered and posted. See:
http://mcmcweb.er.usgs.gov/catalog/tnm_catalog_page2.html I read on
the NRL DMAP site where OGC Catalog Services were planned there. That
would be very interesting.
One thing about NRL GIDB, is there a way to view the original
capabilities file abstracts? Also, is the Access Constraints field
populated from the original capabilities files?
Thanks,
Steve
