[wms-dev] Suggestion for Common GetFeatureInfo Response Format

Andrew,

I didn't get my head fully wrapped around your whole proposal enough to
comment on its completeness, but I really like where this is going.

I can already hear the objections that queries should be done via WFS
and not WMS, and return GML and not simple XML, but IMHO a simple
well-known GetFeatureInfo response to complement WMS (without the need
of a WFS and GML parser) would be a great thing. Of course this should
remain very simple and for more advanced queries or results then WFS and
GML would be the way to go.

As Allan commented, I am not sure what the chances are of getting this
included in the WMS spec, but if this can be handled via a
vendor-specific parameter at least initially then perhaps the first step
would be to submit this as a discussion paper to OGC and see how far it
goes. If something like this was ever adopted, even just as a discussion
paper, then I'd be interested in getting MapServer (server) and
Chameleon (client) to support it.
