I'd like too to add a 'me too': In metadata search OAI-PMH does paging since
years and allows any encoding for it's harvesting approach: try this demo
http://re.cs.uct.ac.za/ and look for resumptionToken.

And for online queries there exists SRU (Search/Retrieve via URL) which
contains a simple query language which can include a bbox parameter:
http://www.loc.gov/standards/sru/.

Both specs. have its origins in digital libraries. Why not look beyond its
boundaries?
