[georss] GeoRSS workshop TODAY

Hi,

OK - but the "lingua franca for machine readable basic (and not so
basic) geometries" is GML - and this will be even more cemented by the
harmonization of KML and GML. It is thus not clear to me what GeoRSS
(look at the name) aims to bring to the table. I appreciate the merits
of GeoRSS Simple and that is done - and in my view any extensions will
be self defeating. Of course simply describing geometry is but a part
of describing geography (the function of GML) as it is simply a part of
presenting geography (the function of KML).

What do you see the function of GeoRSS?

Both and more. RSS is used for a lot more than news. The objective is to
provide a lingua franca for machine readable basic geometries. Support
is now very widespread, you may have seen that a little company called
Google now supports GeoRSS. Our objectives are being met.

GeoRSS itself is approaching solidification, with 1.0 in the fall and
plans for extending the GML serialization with a limited number of
concepts is one of the subjects of today's meeting.

Hi,

It would be helpful if your group could define the target of GeoRSS. I
assume it is either:

1. Packing geographic information into RSS to assist in describing
news events.

2. Describing geographically news events and documents independent of
RSS.

If it is 1., then I would suggest we try to make use of GML/KML as much
as possible.

If it is 2., then I would suggest we try to focus on the requirements of
that task - what makes it different from other tasks? How do we separate
(or do we) communicating geographic information or geographic context
from the presentation of geographic information.

Seems like a dumb question I know - but what is the objective?

I'll be there.
