Just to follow on from the info Josh provided, there are an excellent set of 
resources related to ISO and OGC standards maintained on the SEEGRID website 
in Australia. Overviews of a variety of ISO 19xxx standards can be found at 
https://www.seegrid.csiro.au/twiki/bin/view/AppSchemas/IsoTc211Standards . 
Also links to a variety of resources. The OGC work references all of the ISO 
standards mentioned on this page.
