Hello to all on the list,

I'd like to propose ExploreOurPla.net for the list
of example applications using geoRSS to spread
geographic information in a standardized way.

First of all, I have to say thanks to Marc Wick
from geonames.org. Without his support, the
stable, fast database and the ideas
ExploreOurPla.net had not achieved current level.

ExploreOurPla.net implements a geoRSS feed reader,
completely written in Javascript, capable of displaying
a colored icon for each entry of a given feed on a
interactive map.

All loaded feeds have their individual color and
the icons and entries are linked. A users click
opens the wanted entry, ready for reading,
listening and watching, if media is available.

The so called geofeedExplorer is triggered by
URL parameter, for example:

http://exploreourpla.net/georss/http://today.reuters.com/rss/worldNews
http://exploreourpla.net/georss/http://rss.slashdot.org/Slashdot/slashdot
http://exploreourpla.net/georss/http://esamultimedia.esa.int/multimedia/esc/esapod.xml

Even feeds without any coordinates, will show icons,
when the natural language geocoding process
provided by geonames.org detects toponyms
in an adequate context.

So charged with coordinates and identified toponym
the feeds are sent back to ExploreOurPla.net
in JSON format and presented to the user.
All of this is done within seconds.

Screenshots and backgrund infos are blogged here:

I hope this application example will help to spread the fact,
that geoRSS is a valuable fomat for publishers with content
refering to real places and events on Planet Earth.

Regards
