Dear Members,
following the launch of our new web site (www.appgema.org <http://www.appgema.org/> ) brought by Mike I would like to add some few more information about: a) outputs; b) the need for section coordinators; c) our first meetings.
a) OUTPUTS: as you can see on the left hand side of the new web site six different outputs are listed (under the Outputs word). For most of them there is a brief description of target, objective, etc. Let me just spend few more words about these.
− The “Reference database” and “Glossary” are meant to be live outputs, growing through time by means of the contribution of each of us. As already has been done, we can add entries to both of them. At the end of the day we will have built a proper Glossary of terms and a Reference Database that could be left on the web site and accessed by everyone for free. Before releasing it as a final product it will undergo a peer refereed processes by some acknowledge scholars.
− The “Professional Handbook”, “Digital Atlas”, and “Pamphlet” are still meant to be live outputs, but they will need a more thorough editing phase. Few more words on these. The Professional Handbook is supposed to be more a didactic resource, with plenty of real case studies, many of which form the professional world; the Digital Atlas, should be a reference collection of already existing applied geomorphological maps, translating their legends and notes into the main languages; the Pamphlet is a side product of the WG that will benefit also from the input of other WGs and of people from the professional world, international institutions, etc.
− The “Library” should be a physical place where to collect the paper based maps for further researchers. This will constitute a future warehouse of applied geomorphological maps for the ones that could not be scanned and transformed into a digital product.
− The “Technical” section (under the main AppGeMa menu, still on the left hand side of the page) is meant to be a resource mainly for: Cartographic symbols, GIS tools and resources, on-line maps, etc. The links can be pointed at web-sites or ftp.
− The “Web Links” (under the main AppGeMa menu, still on the left hand side of the page) wants to be a collection of sources of more general information, institution, journals, etc but strictly related to geomorphological mapping. As for the previous one they can be links to web sites or ftp.
Together with Mike Smith we have also thought of having a Special Issue of the Journal of Maps dedicated to the advancement of Applied Geomorphological Mapping.
b) SECTION COORDINATORS: as you can imagine there is the need for having some coordinators to most of the section. This role will not be too much time demanding, but is needed in order to organize the inputs that arrive from the members. Some of you already expressed their wish to give their active contribution to the Group. We are currently looking for coordinators for the following sections: Technical, Web Links, Reference database, Glossary and Library. If this availability is still there, please, just let us know.
c) FIRST MEETINGS: we have received the clearance for holding our first official meeting in conjunction with the Annual Conference of the British Society of Geomorphology, 4th to 6th of July 2007, in Birmingham, UK. Further information will follow soon from Mike Smith, who is the responsible for this meeting. Actually there will also be an informal meeting of AppGeMa members going to the IAG Regional Conference in Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia, 25th to 29th of June 2007: please refer to Colin Pain for this.
Any suggestion is highly welcome and if there is the need for some further information, do not hesitate to contact us.
It is only with a collaborative effort that we can reach these outputs.
Our last deadline will be the 2009 International Conference in Melbourne, Australia.
Best wishes,
Paolo Paron and Mike Smith
