Dear List Members,

thank you for the feedback received so far.

I wish to stimulate the shy ones to share their considerations with all the rest of the WG. In this phase it is very important to collect most of yours suggestions, opinion, and critics, in order to better focus on the activities that will be developed.

I would like to remind you that:

−        you can have a look at all the messages posted to the list, so far, following this link: http://lists.eogeo.org/pipermail/appgema/ ;

−        to post a message you can either directly reply to this one or send an email to appgema at lists.eogeo.org (on the web sites this address is badly spelled and it will be corrected soon) or send it to me specifying that you want it posted on the mailing list;

− for any other problems, communications, etc, please do not hesitate to contact me.

As no other expressions of interests have been communicated for what regards the Vice Chair position, we can welcome Mike Smith as our vice-chair.

Here there is a brief summary of what is emerging so far:

1.	All of you agree with the general Objectives, so far. There is a suggestion is to drop the goal number 2 ( developing different legend systems according to different applications and scales of a geomorphological map) instead of number 1 (developing a systematic, comparative study of different cartographic methodologies and applications). To this regards I would like to add that the goal 2, even if not very well explained in its original form, was intended in relation to the GIS applications. I apologize for not having been clearer before. A good suggestion is the one of preparing a survey on the use and needs of people using geomorphological mapping.

2.	All of you agree with the outputs, so far. Another suggestion is a sort of “Professional handbook” which could be on-line, meant to target the professional community, mainly. An impulse to foster the undergraduate training on geomorphological mapping is also suggested. The strengthening of the use of geomorphological mapping within geomorphologists themselves is also proposed.

3.	Widespread consensus is posted on the need to involve other than geomorphologist in the group, with a special attention for engineers (either engineering geologists and engineers). It has also been underlined that there is an emerging use of applied geomorphological mapping in environmental studies and natural disaster reduction.

4.	A meeting in Europe (western) is well considered, possibly between late March and early April.

5.	The Digital Atlas of applied geomorphological maps receives a good consensus as well as the literature collection.

6.	Only one negative opinion is expressed on the need for two subgroups (one on applied geomorphological mapping itself, and one on land-system/landform mapping).

7.	The possibility of having a free resources on the web for mapping tools/software/libraries is highly encouraged.

8.	Regarding the funding there has been a suggestion to contact the major oil companies to ask for their financial support.

Cheers,

Paolo
